IFA 2010 Friday – Anyone for green, 3D coffee?

By Rachel Harker - Last updated: Wednesday, September 8, 2010

First day of IFA today, and we seem to be on-trend with Kevin the frog peering out from our stand.  He is promoting our Leapfrogging – Radical Eco-innovation process  and seems very at home, with the smart home hall next door, and Philips, LG, Sharp, Samsung, Miele and Bosch Siemens all making announcements about their green eco-design initiatives today.

Samsung greeted us at the entrance with an enormous banner showing their Eco-Bubble washing machine.  Miele have announced a Smart Grid connected fridge, their AutoDos washing machine (which analyses the water to decide whether to use powder or liquid) and claims that real efficiency in vacuum cleaner design comes from air circuit streamlining and a good motor (all encapsulated, of course, in their S6 Compact).  Bosch-Siemens have announced their commitment to improving sustainability across their product range and wanting to set themselves apart from the ‘environmental mainstream’.  They have also launched the intelligent i-Dos system in washing machines (this adjusts the amount of detergent used based on how soiled the garments are and saves water).  Additionally the ActiveWater Eco dishwasher is highly water efficient, and they have unveiled their first A+++ refrigerator.  Philips are advertising their commitment to ensuring that 50% of goods sold by 2015 are green, something they are calling EcoVision 5.  Sharp is promoting ‘Green Front Sakai’ an environmentally sensitive factory for producing environmentally friendly products.  And LG are proclaiming that Life’s Good when it’s green, and are showing a model Smart Home on their stand.

As if that wasn’t enough, research shows that green pressure from consumers is growing.  GfK Custom Research have shown that ecological impact is now the fourth most important buying criteria, on the same level as pricing.  Mistergooddeal (a web based dealer of household goods) commissioned the research and says that 25% of dishwashers, washing machines and fridges they sell are A++ rating.

Phew.  Looks like our prediction of an imminent green revolution wasn’t wrong.

And what else is going on at Berlin Messe today.  Well if it ain’t green, it’s a 3D screens (which is pleasing Edd) and if it’s not 3D then it’s probably a coffee machine which is pleasing our beverage dispensing guru Nathan.

More to come over the next few days…
