Product Development Priorities – Avoid Ugliness!
By Alan Richardson - Last updated: Thursday, May 27, 2010Design has become the critical feature of successful products. Stylised products and packaging are expected, and beautifully designed products usually sell more (e.g. the Ipad: http://bit.ly/ah1qBm). But it can be tremendously difficult to predict where trends are going. How can you ensure beauty is an output of your product development process?
And how you can avoid the perils of the ugly?
- ask the people in your firm who don’t dress like everyone else … they may have insights into upcoming trends you aren’t aware of
- ask your customers, but be aware that they will base their opinion on current styles and might not be ready to appreciate the radical new look yet
- keep track of trends in your product category and others … plot colour, material and form preferences to see where trends and have been and spot where they might be going
Of course there’s more to it than this. For more about getting the right design for your innovative product development, visit www.CambridgeConsultants.com/ugly
