THE END IS NEAR

By Alan Richardson - Last updated: Thursday, December 30, 2010

As we approach CES, its worth wondering “Is the end in sight for consumer product firms?” given the economic, competitive and sustainability pressures. Some say the traditional product firm will soon be no more. Cheap copycat products can now flood a market so quickly that the innovator is lost. To stay afloat, we must now differentiate our offering on the basis of service and brand, not product.

But what does this mean?

  • ending the feature race and designing modular platofrms that last and can be upgraded over time
  • integration of hardware and web based servies, with a completely free flow of content where appropriate
  • marketing to a segment of one – making tailored servcies tat deliver maximum value

Of course there’s more to it than this. For more on how to do innovative product development in this new paradigm visit www.CambridgeConsultants.com/newparadigm. Or catch up with my colleague Duncan Smith at CES, where we will also present our new i-dration concept product
